numerical literacy: enrichment & remedial

WHAT IS ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES?

An enriched activity is designed to get your students talking about Mathematics. Each of the enrichment worksheet in Mathematics should begins with an activity to introduce a mathematics concept through a strategic game with inherent Mathematics content or through a challenge that can be solved using onscreen manipulative. When students are ready, they move on to more difficult activities to stimulate discussion and learning. These enrichment activities in classroom introduce new strategies and help students synthesize the ideas introduced in the initial activity.

Many group activities involved an entire classroom to find the answers. Others are more suited to individual or online explorations. What ever the strategy and techniques that were used by teacher, students will enjoy the unusual perspective of the enrichment activities that teacher takes on mathematics, bringing practical applications to important Mathematical concepts and helping students gain insight into a subject that can be challenging for many. This is the kind of activities that can turn students on to Mathematics in a positive way.

Enriched Mathematics activity can be used either as a class activity or as an individual activity. In class activity, students work together to figure out the best or different strategies to solve each Mathematic challenge. By presenting their ideas to each other, students are able to build more convincing mathematical arguments and, in the process, a deeper understanding of math.

As an individual activity, teacher can have the students to complete these activities as part of their regular assignments. Enriched Mathematics is also an ideal enrichment activity for students who finish their class work ahead of their classmates.

WHAT IS REMEDIAL ACTIVITIES?

Remedial Mathematics activities were designed to help remedial students increase Mathematics proficiency on topics involves. The activities developed sometimes can come complete with questions, "cards," or sample game boards. These remedial activities will make new learning meaningful by relating practice of sub skills to the performance of the whole task, and by relating what the student has learned about mathematical relationships to what the student will learn about mathematical relationships.

Students who need remedial Mathematics activities may benefit from alternative types of instruction. These students may not learn well from traditional classroom lectures and practice worksheets, so giving them more lessons and worksheets may only frustrate them. When we are teaching remedial student, we may want to consider using hands-on activities and inquiry based lessons. These will draw on student discovery and creativity to keep them interested. The teacher knows that boredom is the enemy of learning. By doing the remedial activities, it will encourage students to go on to the next challenge once a step is learned, understanding that not all students learn at the same pace.

In the remedial activities, students will interact with each other as well as working independently, just as adults do at work. Teacher can used text books as it is only one of many resources. Manipulative such as blocks and scales; and technology, such as calculators and computers, are useful tools, and students should be learning how and when to use them. Mathematics inquiry lessons are student-focused. Teachers give students materials and minimal direction; students then explore the topic and construct their own meaning. By changing the type of instruction the teacher give to struggling mathematics students, we may figure out exactly what kind of Mathematics help students need to succeed.
